They used quit a mix of radios. Many 1206s, but also
Lear, Ranger and other popular "light aircraft" sets.
I have a written procedure for issuing radios to ferrying-pilots.
If a radio wasn't factory-installed in the aircraft,
the ferrying pilots were issued a set to be "haywired" in
(or even wired into a little case to be set on the floor-
I have some of these). Usually, the pilot took the radio with her
and either took the train back "home" or flew another leg.
Usually, only the Flight Leader had a transmitter.
The rest of the flight had receivers only, usually LF because
nearly every "Tower" in CONUS transmitted on a Longwave
frequency and of course, beacons and "the beams" were on LF.
I have several sets with handles-
one just a jury-rigged strip of aluminium, and one Ranger set built
into a little luggage case. Have one Lear Tx/Rx "stack" that
was certainly WASP because the badly deteriorated cover found
on the floor of a barn in Texas still had traces
of "FiFiNella" on it. Very cool and one of my favorite pieces :-)
