BTW, I have an idea for a very simple, but every effective AM modulator for 
the AN/GRC-109.

It is that "Simplest Modulator" that was featured many years ago both in QST 
and in various handbooks of the period.

It requires absolutely no modifications whatever to the rig: just plug it into the 
key jack.

Output will be about 1/2 the CW output, or in this case, about 7 watts.

They called it a "cathode modulator" since it was usually used with 
cathode-keyed transmitters, but what it actually is, is a combination of grid 
and plate modulation. I have always thought of it as a sort of "cathode bias 
modulation"
