I recall reading an article in an aviation magazine where they were testing something similar to that using a Culver PQ-14 drone.  The idea was that the system detected the sonic booms of bullets whizzing by and transmitted down the data that told how close the bullets were coming to the target drone.   

They equipped a B-17 as the control aircraft and flew it and the PQ-14 down from WPAFB to Eglin AFB to test.  They got an F-84 pilot to go up and fire at the PQ-14.  The pilot was very very experienced.  Too experienced!  With his first short burst he hit the PQ-14 in the cockpit area and it blew up.

Guess they should have told him to miss it, not hit it.

The guys in the B-17 flew straight back to Wright Patt without bothering to stop at Eglin again.
