I'm sorry, but this terminology is all backwards.  In a simple worm and 
spur gear right angle drive as used in the BC-348, lost motion between moving 
the knob and moving the capacitor shaft has two main sources - backlash 
between the worm and spur gear and endplay in the shaft the worm is mounted on.  

To quote in part Webster's Third New International Dictionary, 

backlash n b: the clearance, slack or play between adjacent movable parts 
(as in a series of gears).

end play n 1 : slight endwise movement (as of a shaft or axle).
