My humble two cents worth.....

Backlash is when the gears move AFTER you have imparted some energy into
the system by say turning a knob and then stopping.  It implies finite
energy storage and a time constant associated with its release, such as the
energy stored in a spring or grease mass that slowly releases that energy
through the old gummy grease.

Play is simply the slop that results from imperfect tolerances.  No
residual stored energy after you stop turning.  No time constant associated
with the release of that energy.

You can have both play and backlash present.  I don't like either one, but
backlash drives me nuts.
