I've been doing Longwave for a very long time.
If you don't have a quiet location and lots of room for 
beverage antennas (and few people do), a loop antenna-
even a small one- you can stear to eliminate noise-
is the way to go.  Active whips are a high noise, low signal
"last resort."   I can hear NDB's from all over the country
and Canada on a little, desk-top 6-inch bar loop 
and loop amp.
