I took the T-17 apart that I modified to see just how I did do it and made some measurements. Keep in mind that the telephone element dimensions can vary a few thousands. My phone element is 1.808 inches in diameter and the stock carbon element is 1.748 inches in diameter so I had to bore out the holder .030 inches. The telephone element is .218 inches thick around the edge and the stock element is .363 inches so if you only bore out enough for the phone element you have .145 inches left to center the stock element if you want to restore it. I certainly wouldn't toss one of the T-17's just because it didn't work. You can machine the plastic ones just as easily as the metal ones. You may have to taylor the exact dimensions to the particular phone and stock elements' sizes. I soldered the leads directly to the phone element as there are no solder lugs.
