Years ago a friend of mine did an electret mic element replacement. His copy here was perfect, litterally as if he was sitting next to me. As an added bonus, I could hear his kids playing, the wife doing dishes, cars passing by, birds chirping and I don't know what all else. Be careful what you wish for! These electrets are extremely sensative!

I've often wondered if even a new T-17 is intentionally insensitive so
hat the user in the airplane has to shout to be heard over all the
mbient noise.
There are electret replacements for carbon mikes, so you might be
ble to fit one of those into the T-17 housing. I bought some from
ike Sandman that are intended as replacements for the T1 element in
he G handset used with 500 line telephones. Somewhere I have the
chematic of what's inside the mike, if you want to try making
our own with an electret element from Radio Shack or elsewhere.
A while back someone pointed out that the Radio Shack electret elements
re wide-band, but there are some others out there that are specialized
arrow band for communication use.
