Is it possible to turn down the element on a lathe? I would think that easier and you don't harm the original casting and also later T-17's have plastic housings.
I have heard of die-hards doing this with a file...Thought of trying that myself. There are numerous post war '50's-'60's avionics carbon mics that still have their "stuff" that show up at auction.
My "hottest" carbon mic is a Telex TEL-66C F.A.A., TSOC58 noise cancelling carbon microphone.
I just aquired an Elecro-Voice 205-STC FAATC RM-1040(A) Differential Microphone. It works but no oppinion yet as to how well.

Lightning may strike me for saying this, but if you ream the inside of a T-17
icrophone out a few thousands (I can't remember exactly how much, but not much)
standard telephone element fits right in and they are a cheap and plentiful.
he microphone fits in a three-jaw chuck ok.
