Well, maybe Evenson and Beach, Editors and Engineers Surplus Radio Conversion Manual Vol I, II, III.
My Vol III is currently MIA along with my CQ conversion manual.
(However, in the search I found the .58 cal mold for the 1861 Springfield that I thought my Brother David had absconded with back in '90....).
I recall the article beginning with a statement atesting to the poor audio quality of surplus gear.

I just paged through my copy of the Q Command Sets publication and I couldn't find any mention of adding an outboard audio stage. I did find, on page 23, the fateful words"The first step is to strip the chassis" in the article on War Surplus for Civil Defense. I had to go wash my hands with Holy Water after touching that page :-)

Isn't that mod in the CQ surplus conversion handbook including Command Sets? My first BC-348 I got as a chassis and it had a 6F6 added ahead of the output tube. It was built on a copper plate (for improved fidelity) and mounted over the dynamotor well. After getting the radio working, I took out the added stage and did not really notice much difference.
The set is a BC-348-C modified to S. I got it in 1979 for $20, I still have it and use it regularly.

Yes. Doesn't he, just? ;-)
I had a terrible time making out WWV under all the distortion and noise. Did
ou? There was quite a bit more than I expected. Perhaps it is just my
ncient, 70 year old, ears...
I'd still like to find that CQ article he mentioned...
