Isn't that mod in the CQ surplus conversion handbook including Command Sets? My first BC-348 I got as a chassis and it had a 6F6 added ahead of the output tube. It was built on a copper plate (for improved fidelity) and mounted over the dynamotor well. After getting the radio working, I took out the added stage and did not really notice much difference.
The set is a BC-348-C modified to S. I got it in 1979 for $20, I still have it and use it regularly.
