[ARC5] Replacing the 12v tubes with 6volt types

Hi,
I'm a real newcomer to appreciation of this ARC-5 "*junk*". I have,
used, and still use an R-23 in the Q5er position..the reason for me
changing my mind about *junk*. More recently I have acquired some more
R-23/BC-453 receivers and parts and then a BC-455 and a BC-454. I'm busy
with recapping, resistor checks, bump and paint, etc. But I intend to
run as close to original as is possible...regarding the inside of the
little boxes the manufacturers put them in. The remote controls, power
supplies, and anything else that's necessary can live outside the box
and do NOT need to be from the same bomber.
AND...
I see no compelling reason to change the heater string. A post in the
most recent hacking thread mentioned the scarcity of 24 volt power
supplies in the 40s, 50s, and maybe the 60s. That is just no longer
true. I find that "12" volt automotive and deep cycle batteries are easy
enough to get and place in series for battery operation and certainly 24
volt AC transformers are just EVERYWHERE. Of the six such radio I have,
five have the original heater string wiring and one is rewired for 12
volts. I know which ones I am going to rewire in light of what I just
said about 24 volt availability (never mind about being less work). That
also preserves some of the original flavor of the radios. Some day my
radios might be the best examples available to the "collectors" of the
future (poor sorry guys). I am avoiding moving them any further from
original when I can (which seems to be most of the time). Maybe they'll
just end up in the furnace or the landfill and it won't matter what I do
with them.
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
73,
Bill KU8H
