Gordon,

The 4-digit numbers stamped on the back of the receivers and transmitters
are the A.R.C. model numbers of the sets. The RAV manual I have lists A.R.C.
numbers as well as Navy Type Numbers for the major components, and 5005,
5006 and 5007 are their numbers for the 1.5-3.0, 3.0-6.0 and 6.0-9.1 MC
receivers, respectively. This and the RAT/RAT-1 manual also says that the serial
number should be stamped on the back, matching the one metal stamped on the
nameplate on the outer shield, as they call it. But I don't recall ever
seeing one so stamped. Cost of rubber stamps probably got excessive.

The RAT/RAT-1. ARA/ATA and AN/ARC-5 manuals that I have don't give the
A.R.C. numbers for the major components, only for the piece parts.

I've no idea how many of the early AN/ARC-5 marked receivers were built,
but I've never seen one so probably not many.

What is the 2nd IF tube in the R-20/21/22?

Although I have never seen any of the early AN/ARC-5 receivers or
transmitters, dim memory says they were to have been ARA-1 and ATA-1 but got AN/ARC-5
nameplates instead. So the major components may have had (apparently did
in these three cases) the same A.R.C. model numbers. Apparently by the time
that the production AN/ARC-5's were built, they were up to the 9000's for
mfg. desig. numbers.
