Its intended purpose was for the Navy GO-3 transmitter, according to 
NAVSHIPS 900,109.  The directory listing includes this:

"See Par. 2-2(2)of RE13A472D.  Uses no external thermocouple.
3/23/1937  MX (507)
AUG 43"

Its predecessor (non-A) is dated 12/17/1931 an marked for general use.
