Thanks.  I used the past tense because the Soviet system that represented my "principal
adversary", when I was an officer on a ballistic missile submarine almost 40 years ago,
is pretty much a thing of the past.

We in the US submarine community...crews on missile boats and on fast-attack boats alike...
had great respect for the capabilities of the ships, aircraft, and crews on the other side.

I'm somewhat nostalgic for the stability that nuclear stand-off between the two great powers
gave to the world scene for 45 years.
