After WWII, some of the Jap's were asked which of our weapons would they
like to see. They asked to see our "automatic artillary pieces".
We didn't HAVE any "automatic artillery pieces". As far as I know, we still
don't.
I certainly know how they could think this though: I was in the Montana
National Guard for a while. I was a radio operator in a Service Battery for a
self-propelled howitzer battalion. The battalion was equiped with those 105
MM SP howitzers which were mounted in what looked much like Sherman
tank hulls. They had big Ford V-8s for power with a carburetor at each end of
the intake manifold.
One year at summer camp, we were given a demonstration wherein several
of these machines came roaring down a dirt road at top speed, swung into
prepared positions, and each crew fired several rounds, 5 or 6 apiece, at the
targets so fast that it sounded like someone rapid-firing an M-1 rifle, except a
whole lot louder. The targets just plain disappeared. I was absolutely
astounded. Still am.
