Even for basic HF usage at the beginning of the war. I have a photo here
from the late W1MMV of his beautiful 6' homebrew transmitter and RCA
ACR-111 receiver which were commandeered as he put it by the military due
to an overall shortage of gear. Gerry said he always figured it ended up on
some ship that ended up at the bottom of a lagoon somewhere in the Pacific.

The Brits used the Halli S-27s extensively in aircraft for tracking down
the German Knickebein targeting beams. Somewhere I read a story about the
Ambassador to the US asking Brits returning home to purchase S-27s, HROs
and other gear to take back with them since the gov't either couldn't buy
them at that point or couldn't get enough of them.

Interesting on the SX-28, hadn't heard of such use beyond the typical
Signal Corp deployment but it makes perfect sense for the timeframe. For
the same reason one couldn't rule out with certainty the use of the RME-69
as a ground receiver in some isolated circumstance. Not sure where you'd
fit it all in a fighter aircraft (considering you still need a
transmitter!) and still have room for the pilot. Then there's that pesky
110VAC 60 cycle power issue....
