Almost certainly this is "wisdumb" from none other than the infamous Wayne Green, W2NSD ("Never Say Die"), ex-(that is, FIRED by the publisher) editor of CQ, later publisher and editor of 73, and possibly the most prominent legend-in-his-own-mind ever to be part of hamdom.

The dissing of the RAL is likely another Greenism; although it could have come from Ken Grayson, W2HDM, who "edited" ("th'owed-together") the Surplus Schematics Handbook.

I will say this, however, in the book's defense... years ago, when I was helping a new Novice with naught but a home brew one tube 6SN7 regen for his receiver, I was able to get an RU-17 going with the aid of the GF/RU schematic. The receiver worked rather well on 160 and 80, and passably on 40 meters; and the Novice thought he had the likes of an R-390, compared to the regen receiver.

Had I not had access to the book then, I couldn't have made the RU come to life.
