Some (I dunno which ones exactly) of the VR tubes had a bit of  
radioactive material in them to help with dark night startup.  I can  
say from experience (a bit later than these tubes) that 2 AM on a  
flight deck can be MIGHTY dark.

Morgan's rules for radioactivity-containing tubes and panel meters:

1) Don't break them open and eat the insides.

2) If you follow rule 1, don't worry.
