     I think Carl is old enough to remember when this stuff 
was sold as door stops by surplus stores.  I think a lot of 
it got mangled because it was cheaper than buying parts. 
Some surplus stuff was recognized as exceptional and sold 
for pretty high prices but a lot was sold as essentially 
junk. It took unusual understanding to realize that much of 
it was not.
