Common Dave, lighten up.   This thing was probably a thing of beauty to some bloke who spent hours conjuring up the contraption.  My guess that it was a modulator given the chunk of magnetic stuff peering out of the top.  maybe the rest of the toooobs were under the cover.  Nice transplant of the big connector on the rear apron.  Rather than coming unhinged over the thing, perhaps some  member of this  august group could tell us all what it was intended to do.  Look on the bright side, it survived in some form. heh  heh  better life than becoming a beer can or siding on a house.
