Radio Americas (nee Swan Radio) was on 1160 kHz and 6.0 MHz in the
60's. If anyone collects old magazines, /Electronics Illustrated/ had
an article on Swan written by Tom Kneitel. The issue is July 1968. He
got permission to go there and see what was up. Of course, he was
treated well but no admissions whatever as to who actually owned the
station, then identified as being owned and operated by "The Gibraltar
Steamship Company". Its a good article and many of artifacts of the
operation were around when I got there. The rolling stock containing
the various studios and equipment were shamefully deep-sixed off one end
of the island. If you look at one of the station pictures, you'll see a
Chelsea Maritime Commission clock on the wall. It now resides in the
shack, here. The Swan Island Island Playboy Club, also mentioned in the
article, was but a vacant concrete pad by the time I got there in the
mid-70's.
