I took the time to read the Occupational Safety and Health Guideline for
Zinc Chromate link on this, and to be more correct, they state that the
"National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers
zinc chromate a *potential* human carcinogen [NIOSH 1992]" Notice the
word *potential*. It produced cancerous growth when implanted inside
the bodies of the lab animals, but so does almost everything we use in
modern life. They then go on to recommend protective measures that are
essentially identical to applying many other coatings that are quite
popular and used extensively, like two part isocyanate polyurethane
enamel coatings that I've used on my machine tools and farm utensils for
an indestructible finish in a harsh environment. I just bought some
more zinc chromate from one of the aircraft parts suppliers, and found
no indication of quantity limits or permissions needed. You just have
to be intelligent about its use.
