Truly impressive and fascinating engineering & technology for the day, on
par with the big German railway guns Dora and Gustav, and weapons like the
Maus Heavy tank (about twice the size of the Tiger) or the Ratte which
would've sported a naval gun turret.
Not terribly practical in time of war, though. The materials, man hours,
and years of waiting that went into the Yamato only to have her sitting on
the bottom within a few hours of being attacked could've been put to far
better use.
There was a sister ship to the Yamato too, sent to the bottom in one of the
post war atomic tests, IIRC. Can't recall the name.
