That is interesting: usually, tail turrets had two guns.

That 1000 rds in tail would further suggest two guns. "500 rds per gun".

OK. Beginning to sound much like the PB4Y-2, but later, and not the B-17G 
either which was a mid-wing.

What do you mean, "stuff". Landing gear? Exposed? I would think not.
