I found this discussion very entertaining so I thought I would add a comment.

Having volunteered for over six years at the National Museum of Naval Aviation and having restored GP, ARC-5, and other aircraft radios, I have found that putting a drop of white vinegar on each screw head and letting it sit for five minutes before trying to remove it works most of the time. The trick is to use a big enough drop so it flows around the head and seeps into the screw threads. On radios that have been in the water for a long time this technique frees up the calcium, etc. that is present.

On an SBD that had been in fresh water for 65 years we removed every screw in a GP transmitter (up to 10-32) without shearing a single one. Also we have found that a sharp rap on the end of the screwdriver handle while turning helps especially on the large screws.

Experience in removing corroded and stuck fasteners goes a long way in helping the process.

Good luck, John W4THQ
