Left handed drills work well. Available from harbor Freight. But finding the correct side for a 3-48 screw may be difficult.
Shearing of the heads 60 year old brass screws in not uncommon. I had a TCE that was a holly terror.

Hello Neil,
The standard engineering solution is to drill at the root diameter and then
retap - the tap, if you're lucky, will drive out the remnant of the previous
screw. Sometimes, I've been really lucky, where there is no corrosion, and
high pressure air has cleared the remnant.
