If I had to guess, it would be a load or bridging resistor added to the 
audio output to correct volume levels for the interphone system, Ben.  
R-31 is unassigned in my version of the SCR-274N manual, so it's a 
possibility.  I have a Navy Aircraft Radio Maintenance Note for the 
ARC-5 that adds a similar resistor, but of course it doesn't cover a 
piece of (ugh) Army trash. :-)   The note is at
