     From their web site Hoppe lubricating oil appears to be 
a petrolium oil. I think there may be a number of similar 
oils sold under a variety of names. Kano Labs instrument oil 
is also described as a highly refined petrolium oil but its 
viscosity may be different. BTW Hoppe is the first outfit 
I've seen that actually advertises snake oil!
     3 in 1 seems to me to have a solvent in it. Maybe not. 
If it does it would explain why its not suitable for small 
machinery. I mean the regular 3 in 1, not the 20 weight 
machine oil sold under the same name.
     I wonder if semi-automatic and automatic guns need oil 
with an extreme pressure additive because of the nature of 
the forces on the parts. A plain oil can be squeezed out 
where there is enough pressure on parts. The classic example 
is the special oil (really a grease) used for hypoid gear 
transmissions. The problem with EP automotive grease is that 
it attacks yellow metals.
