From their web site Hoppe lubricating oil appears to be
a petrolium oil. I think there may be a number of similar
oils sold under a variety of names. Kano Labs instrument oil
is also described as a highly refined petrolium oil but its
viscosity may be different. BTW Hoppe is the first outfit
I've seen that actually advertises snake oil!
3 in 1 seems to me to have a solvent in it. Maybe not.
If it does it would explain why its not suitable for small
machinery. I mean the regular 3 in 1, not the 20 weight
machine oil sold under the same name.
I wonder if semi-automatic and automatic guns need oil
with an extreme pressure additive because of the nature of
the forces on the parts. A plain oil can be squeezed out
where there is enough pressure on parts. The classic example
is the special oil (really a grease) used for hypoid gear
transmissions. The problem with EP automotive grease is that
it attacks yellow metals.
