[ARC5] Nice collection (?) - Don't guess...it's a SCR-178

If you don't wish to play guessing games, it's a fairly common SCR-178.
Try http://www.ebay.com/itm/220959157409 . It probably doesn't deserve
mention on the ARC5 list, since the only aircraft use of the SCR-178
was one set for experimental purposes in the mid-1930s.

There's only about half of the total set. There's another case the
same size with other accessories in a complete set. It covers
2.4 to 3.7 MHz. It uses a regen receiver. The transmitter needs a
VT-25 (10) and a VT-55 (865), neither real common or cheap if the set is
missing tubes, which many are. It's missing the J-44 key that mounts
on the cover. Also, I've seen new never-used sets on the outside that
had the internal wiring deeply covered in mold. Evidently the MFP
process was not often applied to these canvas weights.

I'm guessing this is a 1942 contract item, for something that was obsolete
more than seven years earlier. A real dog, even when new! I've never
been tempted to do anything with my set, almost identical to that shown,
which I found at a local hamfest for $50 in 1986. It's hard to have
much affection for something that wasted war material like a SCR-178 in
1942. The otherwise identical SCR-179 was designed for pack horse
transport.
