[ARC5] VFO provenance

Central Electronics, at one time, sold a conversion kit for the BC-458
"command transmitter" to convert it into a VFO for the model 10A, 10B or 20A
exciters. They included the plastic dial plate shown as well as some parts
necessary for the modification. For an additional $20 I recall, they
included a very nicely painted/silk screened cabinet to enclose the BC-458
that matched the Central Electronics exciters at that time.
The guy who owned this one originally did this one "on the cheap" and didn't
buy the external cabinet!
I had a 10B and a "458 VFO" as my first real SSB transmitter when I was
going to high school. I bought it with money I earned building Heathkits
for the local hams in New Orleans. Originally used it with a second hand
National NC-=125 receiver I bought a couple of years earlier. Yes the
receiver DID drift on SSB and so did the BC-458! I remember buying a
spanking brand new BC-458 for around $5 as they didn't cover a ham band and
were VERY plentiful at the time. (Late 1950's)
The "fib" in the ebay ad is the statement about the 20A transmitter. This
is just the VFO for it! The guy probably doesn't really know what he
actually has, a "5 mhz VFO for the 20A, probably LESS the additional
converter needed for 15 and 10 meter operation as well!
