    One trick it to coat the spline with some oil, mix up some JB weld 
epoxy putty, place the putty into a
piece of metal thin wall tubing with one end stopped up and then push it 
over the spline. It will make an imprint of the
spline in the putty which will harden like a rock and you can attach your 
knob on the tubing which is now
solidly filled with epoxie. The oil is a mold release so that you can slip 
it off the spline once the imprint is made.
