In the infancy of railroad radio communications, some companies experimented with war surplus gear. I have a copy of Radio News which shows a track crew on an old pump handcar, with a BC-1000/SCR-300 pack set radio. There is an article inside about railroad radio experiments. Not sure which railroad this was but I seem to recall it may have been the Great Northern.
I'm not sure if it is in the same article (may have been), but mention was made in an article around the same time that the SCR-522 was also tried out, installed aboard a locomotive and a caboose. It was quickly found that high band VHF was greatly superior to low band, but FM was far better than AM for railroad communications.
