Hi Tim:
The efficiency comes about because of the low rolling friction of metal wheels on metal RR track.
Bar chart showing the increase in fuel efficiency by the railroad from 240 ton-miles per gallon in 1980 to over 400
ton-miles per gallon in 2003.
