Oops, I just realised there's a DC path to ground through the windings,
so feeding the bias direct to the bases won't work even though the principle
is good and is used widely elsewhere. The best way might be to feed
adjustable bias to the CT via the 1mH choke. Doesn't allow setting each
transistor current independently though.

Thank your kindly for the good information, Neil.
This is what I was doing originally-
feeding the DC bias via the choke.
But for whatever reason, the current configuration
works for my purposes.
There's an old saying in The South:
"Even a blind hog can sometimes find an acorn"
and I seem to have stumbled-into just that,
so (save a tweek here and there)
I'm calling it "good" and moving on.

I've reached the place we all must,
where Time is far more valuable
than efficiency.  "It works," works.
