Geoff,

I assume that was a US made rifle.  Isn't it nice to operate old, good  
UhMerrican things?

I have a couple of my grandfathers chisels - he was a cabinet maker -  
and some Stanley planes from that era also.  There are some very nice  
tools made today, usually from Scandinavia or mainland Europe, but the  
old US stuff has a nice feel to it.

PS: Thanks for the experience with 6U8's.  It's good to hear reports  
of experience instead of hearsay.  The Collins community reports grid  
leakage and filament to cathode leakage and shorts, I think.   I had a  
6U8 way back then (60's) in an International Crystal 6M one-tube  
converter that bagged me a contact from Florida to Mass via aurora  
bounce.  But I may not have put enough hours on the thing to get it to  
old age.  The receiver was a 3-6 Mc ARC-5 unit.
