I have a similar AVA-126A story.

Mine came to me with a 6X5 as the rectifier tube, with a
dropping resistor for the filament voltage. It had a 6V
vibrator, but the jumpers in the base had been rewired
for 12V.

(For those not familiar with the AVA-126A, it is capable
of operating on different supply voltages. The transformer
has a number of taps on the primary, and the connections
are made by jumpers in the base of the vibrator, which
uses an octal base.)

And it worked.

However, I tried to make it stock. I replaced the rectifier
with an 0Z4, and was rewarded with very low output voltage,
lots of current draw from the supply, and the transformer
ran hot. Tried silicon diodes, with no help. Snubber
components checked OK.

Put the 6X5 back in, and operation OK.

About a year ago, I made an effort to find the right vibrator,
and found that it has a Radiart part number, but to no avail.
I can't get to my notes right now to find out what that part
number was.
