I worked at Teradyne, Boston, in the 70's, makers of automatic test  
equipment for the electronics industry.  Every single electronic part  
that went into the machines was tested (by our own equipment,  
naturally).  Back then, the equipment was guaranteed for 10 years.   
The power switches were in the back so the users would never turn them  
off.

Cost to test a transistor:  less than a penny
Cost to find a bad transistor at board test stage:  $15.00
Cost to send field engineer to repair a machine broken down in the  
field:  $700 or more.
