Hello Dave,

Fill the engraved characters with wax - one that won't be dissolved by the 
carrier / thinner used for your various intended spray coats, though, 
probably only that used for the primer is all you need worry about. Do your 
painting. When it's all dry, use a hair dryer or other focussed heat gun to 
melt out the wax - perhaps help it out with a tooth pick.
