Ok before I go any further than this- please do not feel you HAVE TO mail
me off-list to tell me I am right, dead wrong or otherwise - I am a little
off set by the number of people on this mailing list the that felt it was
important to mail me directly or CC me with their response.
So here is my LAST response to this issue-
Does pincushion or barrel distortion occur when copying a flat object with
a camera lens ? Yes
Does a flatbed scanner eliminate pincushion or barrel distortion- Yes
BUT, be aware even the best flatbed scanners can create their distortion
of their own - Drum scanners are the way to go but at a price of 15 to 40
thousand- its unlikely you will find someone to loan you the use of one for
free.
Do I think that it is significant or even perceptible with a normal or mild
telephoto focal length for copying a document less than 20 x 24? NO, not
really- but that is my opinion, of course
If you felt it was necessary to TILE the image then at that point for
greater resolution -then using a camera is pointless- scan in sections
instead on a conventional sized scanner.
Last point - if you have a camera and a tripod or can borrow one- the cost
of doing the copy of my way IS FREE. If you don't like the result. HAVE
it scanned afterwards you only loose some time.
Hopefully someone on this list will come forward and say " I have a
large format scanner I will scan it for you" but until that time I think
that my "cheap and cheerful" option is still a viable one
Bill - If you like this option AND want me to help you with this project -
YOU can mail me off list
