The Zero's engine, the Nakajima Sakae, was based on development of French Gnome-Rhone engines, which the Japanese company received a license to build in the late 1930's. The Gnomes were in turn inspired by British Bristol company designs, which they had gotten a license to build earlier.
The Mitsubishi company had connections to Pratt and Whitney and as result tended to build larger engines.
If you do an Internet search for "Design Analysis of the Zeke 32" you will find an article done by the Aviation Magazine people in 1945, where they took a Zeke 32 apart and provided detailed info on how it was built, although not much on the engine or radios.
