hello , it is funny about the attribution of copying to japanese ww2 stuff. in britain it is said that the nakajima sakae was derived from the alvis leonides owing to the similarity of the valve gear which is different to that used by pratt & whitney. it is a fact that the bmw 132 used in the junkers ju52 is so close to the the pratt & whitney 1320 that you can fit one right on wthout any modifications . before i learned better , i believed that the zero was a copy of the howard hughes racer.
the truth is that designers use state of the art knowledge and take the best ideas they can find .from wherever they can. incidentally , everyone i know who heard zeros says the same thing about the engine note. i would imagine it was due to the design of the exhaust system .alan G4GEN
