The SCR-718 receiver-transmitter (BC-788) was upgraded to a 4400 MHz unit,
and had a designation APN-something three digits. (the display stayed the
same) This was installed in many KC-135, and C-130E aircraft in the
sixties. The Original BC-788 could not be used CONUS due to its 450 MHz
operating frequency. We had them in our C-130Bs in the early eighties, and
could not use them over land or within 100NM of CONUS. The pulse altimeters
were removed from the KC-135s at the same time the APN-218 Doppler was
installed (1984 or so). The KC-135 Flight deck has to be the most modified
in AF history, we are now at PACER CRAG block 45 RVSM, and finally, the last
vestiges of the old tube gear are gone, the R-666/ARN-32 Marker beacon
receiver. Interesting note- the only remaining B-52s, the H model, still
have a single ARN-14 VOR!

Speaking of KC-135's... I was on a crew to fly the B-29 Hawg Wild from
Tucson to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford England in 1980. We stopped for
a week at Loring AFB in Maine for repairs in preparation for the trip across
the Atlantic.
We had some nice base tours while we were there and a B-52 navigator named
Jake Huffman had taken us in a B-52 going through overhaul and then we got
to go inside a KC-135. I was astonished to see the indicator for the SCR-718
radio altimeter mounted on the left side of the Navs panel. It was complete
with DAY-44 on the data plate. What a surprise to see a WWII radio installed
in a current Air Force aircraft, well current for 1980 anyway.

I have a copy of a 1960's vintage KC-135A pilot's manual. The Gibson Girl
is featured in it.
In the movie Island in the Sky, not only is the Gibson Girl featured, but on
the downed C-47 the radio operator using a BC-348 can be seen as well.
Back in the late 1970's across the street from Tinker AFB there was a
surplus dealer selling Gibson Girl transmitters in those large yellow
soft-sided storage containers.
I recall reading that the Gibson Girl was a copy of a WWII Luftwaffe
emergency transmitter. Anyone ever hear of that? And I think the US models
included not only 500 KHZ but an 3MHZ range HF frequency as well.
