I have now found logs of cargo and transport flights
which show the Radio Op did in fact copy encoded traffic.
Given the other logs it appears to be
an unusual occurance, but did happen.
Example:
25 Aug 1944 1600 hrs, flight from Bangor, Maine to
Gander Field, New Foundland.
CW transmission from "WYXN" on 7445 KC
1530 BLACK = ABLE SUGAR UNCLE
UNCLE ZEBRA ABLE PETER = 1530 WYXN
