[ARC5] LF NDB's

A few NDB's also had weather forecast data in addition to the Morse ID. Not
many had that. I recall one in SC and I think the sectional shows at least
one in GA. None in Florida that I know of.

In my 2nd floor apartment in Midwest City, OK in the mid-70's I could tune
in a number of NDB's using my GE multiband set or my R-11A. I can got only
one station where I live now. The NDB at the local airport was shut down a
little while back. I miss it. My airplane has no LF receiver but having a
"frequency standard" broadcasting 1.5 miles away was useful for testing some
radios. The Geiger Lake NDB had been abandoned by the FAA and picked up by
the local airport authority to care for, but I do not get it on the air
either, now.

I recall hearing that NDB's are still in demand overseas and that the
airport authority could sell the old one at our field and get a tidy sum
from users in Africa or South America. So good luck finding a used one!

I am aware of the amateur band at 160-190 KHZ; a friend of mine and I built
an unsuccessful transmitter for that range in the early 1970s. A 453 or
R-11A ought to cover that with a minimum of recalibration. Has anyone used
the new amateur band at 137.5 KHZ? And do y'all think a 453 or R-11A will
go down that low very easily?
