My "collection" consists of six LMs and a BC-221 sans useable case. Of the
LMs, half don't have books and, of them, two are earmarked to bring the
others back to life again. They were purchased just for that purpose and
are not intact units. The BC-221 hopefully is repairable and, if so, I hope
to make it into a TS-164, not a major conversion since that's how it was
done in the "old days" - remove from old case and put in new one. The two
parts units, once they've made the required contributions to the others,
will be used to make something new and cool although I have no clue what
right now, mostly because the range of possibilities is fairly wide.
Getting a few more "hackers" (with tubes) would be cool to do more playing
but I'm not going to be upset of none come along. Another BC-221 to go with
the SCR-A*-183 & SCR-274-N display units would be nice as well to "keep it
real."
The LM has always been a favorite of mine from my first one in 1961 and I
see absolutely no reason to change to the latest digital whiz-bang toy* so I
can watch the 1/10 cycle digit get all fidgety. Or the 1 cycle or the 10
cycle or, for that matter, the 100 cycle in a great number of cases. Heck,
I can hear the beat note down to within a couple cycles and that's close
enough for anyone.
The new setup for bringing the display equipment back to life will use
several LMs plus a TS-174 when I can find one or two I can afford. The
latter will be needed for the postwar VHF & UHF ARC equipment since I don't
have "real" ARC test equipment. (Sadly the VOR/ILS equipment will have to
go uncalibrated. What a bummer.) A TS-175 would be nice as well to manage
the glide slope receiver but I'm sure that ain't gonna happen.
* I'm not a total digi-bigot since I have several projects in mind for later
that will use DDS VFOs and digital displays. But they're for later, after
the current projects are complete and I can take the time to develop them
more fully.
