Did it ever occur to anyone to use the darn thing for what it was designed
for? Like, heaven forbid, a frequency measuring device, or marker generator?

I'm ashamed to admit that I use a couple LM-(*) version of the BC-of them in
WW2 Navy radio setups, per original system requirements. I'll also come out
of the closet by saying that the lowly collection of junk box parts (as some
people see it) does the job of setting receiver and transmitter frequency
exactly on the required net frequency very well.
Wow, now I said it!
I'm running to don my asbestos suit!
