OK. I got some photos of the receiver in question: it is restorable. 
There do not appear to be any un-original holes in it, and all the 
sockets are still there.

Also, all but one of the "flower-pots" are still there too.

I am making him up a care package with most of the parts he needs.

Turns out that this particular receiver is an ARA. Don't yet know the 
contract date.

He also has a transmitter that he intends to restore.
