The AN/ARC-5 was a follow-on to the ATA/ARA - virtually identical -
which followed the SCR-274-N, and the RAV and RAT sets, of which the
Type K was the prototype. Yes, they were early superhets, and were the
brainchildren of engineers at Radio Frequency Laboratories, later
Aircraft Radio Corporation of Boonton, N.J. (A VERY small but
highly-advanced research and design firm.) I believe they were conceived
in the wake of the Air Corps Air Mail fiasco of 1933, though the first
sets A.R.C. produced then were the TRF RU/GF and SCR-183 sets. Yes,
they were superhets, modular and for the time, quite miniaturized.
