TCS spare parts kits came in haze gray steel boxes, as did those for most
shipboard gear. ATA/ARA and some other aircraft set spares came in haze gray
wooden boxes. Although a few aircraft set spares boxes were steel (ARD is
one I know of). Size of the boxes varies considerably. The spares boxes
tend to approximate the size of the radios or other equipment. Although the
ATA/ARA one could be said to be closer to the size of a typical installation
(2 or three receivers and 1 or 2 transmitters). As the aircraft spares were
not carried in the aircraft, I've no idea how they decided whether to use
steel or wood.
